Matt - Reed and Jayne's Matt, Frankie's Matt, my Matt - died of a broken heart.
- pg 18

And everything else that ever mattered in my entire existence just... stopped. I was underwater again, seeing things in a slow-motion fuzz without sound or context, without feeling, without care. The world could have ended and I wouldn't have noticed.

In a way, it
did end.

- pg 18

When it happens, you're totally unprepared, fragmented and lost, looking for the hidden meaning in every little thing. I've replayed the events of that day a hundred thousand times, looking for clues. An alternate ending. The butterfly effect.

- pg 52

I pull open the glass door and walk to the middle of the store, letting the smell of old books soak into my lungs. It's different than I expect; it feels more like a library than a store, and I can totally picture Matt hanging out here. He loved to read. He loved words, the way they string together into sentences and stories. He wanted to study them, to know and create thm, to share them with the world. Often, Frankie and I would sit on his bend while he read passages from his favorite books, pacing frantically as he turned the pages for best parts of a story. He read with intensity and was passionately in love with every character, every turn of plot or pasisonately in love with every character, every turn of plot or twist of language. He made the characters come alive for us, like he wasn't reading a work of fiction but telling stories about his own friends.
